Following an upward trend first seen in the Spring of 2022, family homelessness in New York City increased significantly throughout 2023, growing from 12.7K and eventually reaching a plateau towards the end of the year at around 19.4K families. As 2024 progresses, we will continue monitoring developments in the census, updating our weekly tracker to chart the number of families with children in NYC’s DHS shelters.
